Remembering

The time of our childhood influences our attitudes so much!

That time of parental and cultural input really makes us what we are, I think. My brother and I were greatly influenced in our attitudes by the experiences of our youth and the leadership of our parents. We were taught to honor and respect those who fought for the rights and freedoms of our nation and what a patriotic commitment required of the individual who made that commitment, even to the sacrifice of one's life for the sake of the nation. We were fortunate that our father was just old enough, I guess, to not be drafted in the time of World War II. However, some extended family members were active in the Great War and some even gave their lives. For that reason I am more aware of that war that our country participated in than others. The impact of that war came closer to my family than did others. It is natural for me to be reverent and be grateful for those who sacrificed for the nation because of my up-bringing. Hopefully I have inspired that awe in my children and that they can pass that respectful attitude on to the grandchildren.

Give thanks and remember the fallen ones. Express your gratitude and celebrate your freedom!

H&C Feature of the Week: Clean off the Bolt
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature Clean Off the Bolt Week. In celebration of Memorial Day this week we will also punch your Fab Card for fabric purchases including the Clean Off the Bolt purchases. That means that when you buy all that remains on a bolt you can also get your card punched for the purchase amount. Whoo-hoo! We have never done that before as I can remember. Only this week and only to help you be aware of Memorial Day. It is like this: regular Clean Off the Bolt discounts of 25% on regular price fabric when you take all on the bolt or another 10% off a sale price fabric when you take all on the bolt PLUS we will punch your Fab Card. Take advantage of our craziness now. It may never happen again.

Remember

In thinking about the holiday this weekend, I have reflected on what happened at this time of year in my family when I was a child more than fifty years ago. Memorial Day always fell on my mother's birthday, May 30. Nowadays it is the Monday closest to May 30. As I thought about this I began to remember how Mom always pointed out a memorial stone on the campus at Clemson near the Old Greenville Highway. It held a bronze plaque naming Clemson graduates who lost their lives in the freedom fight of World War I. She then would refer to a cousin who lost his life in World War II. Raymond had a son who is my age, so it always made me very aware that his Dad had perished in the war fighting for our freedom. That was always a time of renewed patriotism for my brother and me. This weekend I decided to look again at that memorial as a way of remembering the fallen patriots.

It was not where I remembered it to be! In the name of progress it has been removed from its original position. Bobby and I started out to find it. I called my brother Bob because he remembers everything we ever did as children; he would surely know what had happened. He did. Rats! He knows it all. Well, he knew that it was removed so that the highway could be widened, but he didn't know what happened to it. He even said it has been gone for 40 years - no way! Maybe it has been gone 30 years, maybe. Well, Bobby and I found it. We're good together.

This memorial stone is now located on the Sikes Hall side of the Rotunda and President's Garden along Old Greenville Highway. It is a large stone that looks like those that Dad called Iron Rock. There is the bronze plaque that names "cadets" lost in World War I. Finding this set Bobby and me on a visit to each war memorial on the campus. Such a tour does stir gratitude and patriotism before you realize it is happening. Thanks be for all those who have fought for our sakes in all conflicts!

Wow! My Head is Spinning

My head is spinning from all I have seen at Husqvarna Viking International Convention. Wow! The Designer Diamond deluxe is a beauty - Diamonds are a girl's best friend. This beauty has a hidden treasure even. That treasure will give you the best looking double-sided embroidery you could imagine. Then there is the update to 5D embroidery software. Cheryl is chomping at the bit ready to share the innovations with you. Clear your calendar if you love software for embroidery - did I say free update? Well, I should have. How about that?

And Embroidery Design packages - oh, my! I think there are five or six. Imagine Decorative Cutwork, a new collection of quilting designs, I can't even remember them all just now. Also there are two new feet: Clear Invisible Zipper foot (easy as pie) and a Twin Gimping foot and guide. What fun!!

Read on in the email to see what else is happening.

Get Together

It is again travel time for Husqvarna Viking Dealers. This year we go to Reno, NV. We will spend four days in intense classes learning the "ins and outs" of the innovations that have been developed for our machines and our embroidery software. When we are back from this trip we will have a day with Husqvarna Viking Educator Barbara Moore on June 8 to show you how we can use these innovations and new features to make our sewing and embroidery more fun and efficient. We will enjoy lunch together and have a great day. Call in to the shop to reserve your seat for the day. Your cost is only $15 (including lunch) for a day of fun and fellowship.

H&C Feature of the Week: Books
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature books: buy one at regular price and get the second one for 50% off. That means that you can make the choices for which ones you wish to buy and get a bargain in the process! Remember that book you left behind in indecision the last time you were browsing books? Well, now it can be a part of your bargain. (In-stock items only).

Kids in Summer
At Heirlooms & Comforts we always have Sewing Camp for Kids on the first four days of the last week of July. Kids from 8 years of age to 15 years of age, boys or girls, can come for four days of sewing with Judy and Fran. If you have youngsters who are interested in sewing and you have not signed them up for the camp, you should contact us soon to complete registration because the class fills rather rapidly. Tuition is $60 per student and there is a daily kit fee not to exceed $10 each, usually around a $5 average. We provide the sewing machines; you provide the students. The kids have fun and make great projects while learning a wonderful life-skill.
