We've Done It Again

The staff of Heirlooms & Comforts has done it again! They have successfully kept the refreshments fresh and drawn for in-shop prizes and made a beautiful setting for the Fall'n Stars quilt and cut yards and yards of fabrics you wanted and located book titles you were searching for and given out directions to the next shop in the "hop", etc. Thank you ladies for arranging a beautiful shop interior and to Bobby for cleaning windows and painting trim to make the shop look clean and happy. And if you hadn't been by since last fall when the Town of Central and the SC Highway Dept. re-scaped the front where the street and the sidewalk were crumbling, don't you love the sidewalk improvements and the parking improvements along with the added safety of the stop sign? Thanks to all our old friends and new customers who participated in another successful Carolina Shop Hop!! You make this an unforgettable time in the lives of those who serve you at Heirlooms & Comforts.

Finally!

John with Eleanor-first time he held her
The past two weeks have proven that one should never give up a dream. FINALLY! A Granddaughter. Eleanor Jane Ballentine was born on July 8, a healthy 8 lbs. 14 oz. and 22 inches long - the first granddaughter for Bobby and me and for her maternal grandparents, Coach and Peggy Huckeba in Arkansas. Eleanor came to a world of 6 Ballentine boys and 3 Huckeba boys. Now the challenge is to see if she plays ball or plays with dolls surrounded by three football coaches in her uncles and grandfather.
Eleanor on her quilt from "Anna Banana"

Grandma Ballentine is going to start sewing with batiste and laces!! I'm hoping that my theory of how a child behaves is somewhat affected by the style of clothing she is dressed in - dressing prissy helps one to feel prissy. Do you think she could be influenced by those boys to wrestle and tackle when she is wearing frills? We'll see, because Grandma and Mamma Peg are planning on pink and pretty for this little lady.

Eleanor screaming because Grandma has to go back to SC

Grandma is so grateful to the ladies of Heirlooms & Comforts for picking up the "slack" at the shop while I stayed in Arkansas to help get Eleanor and her mom and dad through the first week of her life! We had some really great times together. Her room is all set and decorated beautifully. Mom picked out the fabrics and Grandma made the curtains and crib set. Eleanor's dad saw that there was fabric left from the decorating and requested YET ANOTHER quilt - imagine that from the man who never had enough quilts. When I announced to Eleanor that it was time for Grandma to come home on Saturday her reaction was to scream and cry. Don't you love it when they cry for you? I've included some photos from the week for you to see this beautiful girl. Excuse my bragging, but I agree with Grandpa and her dad that Eleanor is beautiful.

H&C Feature of the Week: Clover Silk Pins
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week our feature is "Fall 'n Stars" Carolina Shop Hop 2012 with a 25% discount on Clover Silk Pins. These are such skinny pins that they do not skew your fabrics when you pin seams together for sewing. They are long enough to hold the surrounding fabrics securely for the sewing process. These pins have a glass head so that you can press over them and not worry about melting the plastic heads. We find that these are our favorite pins and you can't have too many of these staple items!

Carolina Shop Hop
Carolina Shop Hop with 14 great Carolina shops included in the hop around northwest South Carolina and western North Carolina continues through Saturday, July 21. Store hours are different this week and you can register for door prizes and grand prizes. Go the www.carolinashophop.com to find all the rules of participation and to print out a Passport to get stamped for qualification to win those prizes including a Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 875Q. Hop on in for great fun!

Happy 4th of July

We probably have as many different ways of celebrating Independence Day as there are families in our great country. We have known many changes in our observance over the years. Now in 2012 our immediate family is in several different locales and Bobby and I have landed in Arkansas to spend the holiday with our oldest child and his wife and family. How nice this is to see yet another family similar to ours in fellowship. Different, yet not so different. We are, really, waiting for grandchild number 7 to come into the world. Number 7 was expected last Wednesday, but has decided to make us wait a while longer. All is ready; we just need this baby to cuddle with and coo to. Number 7 will come into a great situation - four grandparents who are already crazy over the first grandchildren, two loving parents, four uncles, five aunts, and NINE boy cousins. Whoa! Lots to learn and adjust to, Number 7. But come on; the nursery is ready (Grandma got done ahead of time) and the quilts are ready - thanks "Anna Banana".

I am a happy Grandma! I can be patient when things are in good order.

If you choose a sale priced fabric you can get another 10% off when you buy all that is remaining. Come in on Monday and Tuesday to get your choices before the Carolina Shop Hop begins the next weekend.

BOGO 50%

For the next few days the "detail man" in the life of Heirlooms & Comforts will be at work on the front of the shop. You may have to walk around his ladder and bucket, but I guarantee that when he is finished with his project we will have a prettier face. Bobby's motto seems to be "never hire a job done that you can possibly do yourself without harm to the object or the craftsman." Several of the ladies in the shop thought that if you all hadn't seen Bobby suited-up for the job at hand that you just might get a chuckle out of this photo. Bottom line - excuse our clutter while Bobby paints the front of the shop.
Sara

H&C Feature of the Week: BOGO 50%
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature BOGO 50% which means that you can buy one item at regular price and get one "same kind" item at 50% off. That means that one yard of fabric qualifies you to buy another yard of equal or lesser value at 50% off; or one pack of machine needles at regular price and another pack of machine needles at 50% off; or one ruler at regular price and another ruler of equal or lesser value at 50% off; etc. The rules are that you purchase one item at regular price and qualify for a second item of equal or lesser value of like classification for half off the original price. No limit to the number of items you may purchase in pairs. Exemptions include sewing machines and sergers, cabinets, and embroidery software suites (Dept 975).

Successful Event

Another Carolina Shop Hop has run it course. What a great time we have all had participating in this adventure. It was really nice to see friends we have made across the years as they have hopped from year to year. We all have aged and wizened as time has gone by. We have sewed our purchases and used our prizes in our art/craft of quilting and sewing. When you share your items with us it is always a joy to see what you have made.

The Carolina Comforts book added a new dimension to our fun this year. Hopefully you had an opportunity to say to Robin and the others who worked on her committee how much you liked the book. If not yet, send a quick email to Asheville Cotton Co and Robin so that she knows about your appreciation. We have copies of the book to sell at $18.95 if you failed to get one during shop hop.

The 13 shops will convene on July 25 to finalize the year 2011 Carolina Shop Hop. Then the prizewinners from the drawings will be notified of their good luck. Keep an eye and an ear out after the 25th to see if we pull your name.
Sara

H&C Feature of the Week: 20% off One Item of your Choice

Check out the list on our web site to see what is available. You just might find what you have been looking for including the great Designer Diamond!

Hands Up

What is it that happens to us when we become grandparents? We begin to act and think differently, I think. Last week as I was "bonding" with the new grandsons in Texas, I began to look at how different the twins are. Finn is the lanky one with narrow long feet and slender fingers and very defined, small facial features. What a handsome kid (even if he is my grandson). And Miles is the "stout" baby with the deep wrinkles in the arms and legs; the short stubby fingers and large hands; the square feet with toes all the same length; and the chubby, pinch-able cheeks. What a handsome kid (even if he is my grandson). They are just recipients of different traits from the same gene pool.

Miles's Hand
While spending time with them I began to think about the hands. Miles's hands remind me of my father's broad, sturdy but gentle hands - hands that did hard physical work and also offered kind, gentle care and reassurance. Finn's hands remind me of his own loving mother who uses her hands to nurture her three boys, prepare their food, guide their play and their learning, care for their needs, and at the end of a long day gently caress their precious heads as they sleep.

Finn's Hand
I remember my mother's hands as she prepared food for our family. They moved in a rhythm that was almost like a dance as she snapped beans or peeled peaches. Hard as I try, I cannot achieve that movement. I remember her hands as she caressed fabrics and manipulated the fabric into patterns and shapes that became quilts made with love and care. She had such a way with handling fabrics that I constantly try to emulate. Those were loving hands that created beauty, both physical and "spiritual", that she shared with those of us near her.

Hands are an extension or manifestation of our personality in a way. They can hurt or they can heal. They can destroy or they can sustain. They can be idle or they can be creative. Watch as people around you use their hands - how differently they employ their hands in day's time. Hands tell stories of life. I hope all the stories from my hands are uplifting!

At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature the continuation of the Carolina Shop Hop. We are offering three items as allowed by the shop hop rules for your consideration:
  1. Clover Silk Pins with glass heads is the notions item on special at 25% off. These pins do not skew your fabrics when pinned because they are so skinny.
  2. Carolina Comforts is the book resulting from Robin Culbertson's compilation of quilt patterns from the 13 participating shops in the hop.
  3. Sophie's Choice block kit, styled by our friend and customer Sophie Hart, is the block that H&C contributed to the theme of Civil War Reproduction style fabric/pattern for 2011. $6 per kit is the price.
See the quilt that Judy designed using the 13 blocks from the shop hop participating shops. It is hanging in the front of the store for your viewing pleasure.

Reproduction Interest Club
At Heirlooms & Comforts Joan Grove and Sarah Parham are organizing a group with interest in reproduction style fabrics and quilt patterns. This is intended to be a group that meets to share ideas, sewing tips, and challenges based on antique fabrics in reproduction. There are numerous fabric vendors who offer styles that have been directly inspired/copied from museum quilts and fabrics from all eras in the history of fabric weaving and printing. The organization meeting is being held on Monday, July 18 at 10:00am at H&C. Come for this brief meeting with pen and paper and your calendar to offer input into how the group will interact to learn more about period fabrics and design. What fun to make reproduction pieces and challenge each other! Come find out what these two talented ladies have come up with. No charge.

Gadabout Grandparents

Bobby and I are becoming the Gadabout Grandparents! Here we are in northwest Arkansas just before going to central Texas. Half of our offspring are west of the Mississippi, you know. And we have to see them more often now that half of our grandsons are west of the Mississippi River. So we are driving this time, pulling our utility trailer that we have previously used for going to quilt shows. It is loaded with a lot of those things that didn't leave our house when the sons went out on their own. You know what I'm talking about: the "don't throw it out, Mom; I might want it some day" things like the Tonka Toys and the books and the furniture, etc. Now we are taking it to them. They can use it or lose it. It is no longer in my care. One son has the largest house in the family now and no children yet; and the other son has the smallest house and the largest family. Go figure. That they are happy in their situations is what it is all about.

We expect to arrive back at the quilt shop in time to hang all the wonderful quilts that we want hoppers to see. Some of these are ones that customers have made and some are ones that staff members have made and some are heirlooms that were in the closet. Come by during Shop Hop and see all the beautiful models that thrill us so much.
Sara

At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature Carolina Shop Hop with a commemorating theme to highlight Civil War Era fabrics and quilts. See our rendition of the quilt made from the blocks that the participating shops have designed/kitted. As you hop about the route for Carolina Shop Hop you can collect the kits that each shop has put together. Then you can combine the finished blocks into a beautiful quilt to reflect the style of the quilts from the Civil War period of our country's history.

Also as you hop around the shops you will see the real models that are included in the Carolina Shop Hop book called Carolina Comforts. Kathy White designed the quilts that are featured from Heirlooms & Comforts. We are pleased that the editor of the book, Robin Culbertson from Asheville Cotton Company, used the photos of Kathy's beautiful quilts in the quaint setting at the front of the Central Roller Mill. You will want to purchase one of these books during Shop Hop because it is a great book and you will be able to save $2 per book during the July 8 thru July 16 time frame. All the 13 quilts in the book are great; you will love making all of them!

Pre-Owned Machines Available
Whenever a new model Husqvarna Viking machine is introduced, it creates great buys for those who wish to have a bargain-priced pre-owned machine. That is the case at Heirlooms & Comforts right now. We have a list of used machines that you just might be interested in. Click on this link to go to the full list to see what has been traded in lately. Some models are moving out the same day they come in. Check with us often to be sure you don't miss these good ones.

Holiday Hours
Remember that we are closed on July 4th and will return to regular hours on Tuesday, July 5th.

Vacation for the Nation

You may know that in the South of the United States the textiles industry was "alive and well" for a great part of the 20th Century. Then there was the recession and the transfer of operations to off shore facilities that combined with many other factors and took the industry out of the economic picture in the south. Having been a part of that workforce, Bobby and I experienced a lot of tradition and felt the loss of the industry poignantly when it declined. One of the traditions of the textile industry in the south was that the mills shut down during the week of July 4th. Everyone who worked in a mill got a vacation paycheck. Well, that was a bonus for those hourly wage earners. They went to the beach or to the mountains and visited all the "sights" in the area. If they opted to not travel with family and/or friends, they took that "free money" and spent it on new appliances or cars or recreation equipment - something "bonus" in their lives. They worked hard and they planned each year for the "week of the 4th." Maintenance employees were the only ones who worked that week and they were servicing the machinery that had to be silent while they worked on it. One year in particular (1973) Bobby opted to help the crew work that week because he and I decided that he would be more needed in August when baby #3 was to be born. Guess what. Baby #3 didn't wait until August. He was born July 9, during the week after the 4th that year. Now Baby #3 and his beautiful wife have three babies of their own. Grandma and Grandpa are doing the "week of the 4th" idea and shutting down the operation for a few days at Heirlooms and Comforts to go on the road to visit our families west of the Mississippi.

Enjoy your family and friends during this time of celebration of our nation's Independence. Wave a flag! Have a picnic. Exercise caution in playing. Be safe. Show your patriotism. Celebrate soundly (firecrackers and all). Take in a fireworks show wherever you can find one. Celebrate Freedom!
Sara

Oh Yeah! Check out our pre-owned machines!

H&C Feature of the Week: Clean Off the Bolt
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature Clean Off the Bolt all four days. New, New, New!

About this much time passes after Quilt Market before new items begin to ship into the shop. We got at Heirlooms & Comforts a load of new book titles this past week. The shelves are full of them. There are some really great ideas among these books and there are too many to name them here. So, you need to make a trip in to see what is here. Be inspired like we are to try the new ideas. Additionally, Kathy White has been at it again with making things that look fun. There is a new sample made from a border stripe that was really easy to make and fun to play with in the design process. Ask about it too.
Sara

H&C Feature of the Week: Selected Patterns
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature selected patterns at 50% off original price. There are two large baskets full of these patterns for you to choose from. Among them are patterns for quilts and for clothing. Come in soon for the best choices, of course. Many of these are single copies of the design. Make your choices and let us help you find the right fabrics to sew up.

Carolina Shop Hop
Carolina Shop Hop 2011 starts on July 8 and goes until July 16 with shops taking Sunday off during that time. Look at the Carolina Shop Hop web site for the details including what you must do to be eligible to win the thirteen $100 gift certificates. There are other prizes to be distributed as well. We are commemorating the Civil War with our quilt blocks containing reproduction fabrics from that era of history. We are looking quite different this year without batiks for a change. Be sure to hop on by to get a look.

Independence Day Celebration
At Heirlooms & Comforts we will be closed from Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4. We will reopen at 10am on Tuesday, July 5. This is another opportunity to show your colors and celebrate our gift of Freedom and Independence won for us by those who preceded us in citizenship. Be grateful; celebrate heartily; eat well; and exercise wisdom in safety.
