I Could Hardly Imagine

I could hardly imagine what it would be like to have all six grandsons in the swimming pool at one time, but I have gotten an idea since four out of six were in the pool at the home in Fort Worth yesterday. Only the sixteen-month-old twins were not in there, but they were circling the protective fence as the others swam with Tio and Grandpa. Oh my goodness how one must be alert at a time like that. At the same time it is great fun to see them all together, those six boys, for the first time ever. Now we just have to raise up Eleanor to join them one day - a rose among thorns, don't you think? NEVER. My boys are NOT thorns. They are true gentlemen (sometimes). All of the adults are working on that project. Grandpa and I have had a truly special, long trip. This has been quite an eventful week that can only be appreciated when told in person. So only those who ask will be bored by the details.

H&C Feature of the Week: Clean Off the Bolt
At Heirlooms and Comforts this week we will feature Clean Off the Bolt week. You have seen this now for a long while that we offer a special discount on fabrics when you buy all that remains on the bolt, no matter what the yardage is. 25% off is the bonus for buying regular price goods and an extra 10% is the bonus when you buy sale price goods. Come in early in the week for the best choices. We will be looking for you.

As we mentioned last week, we have received a good quantity of new merchandise lately. It is on the shelf and ready for you to survey and plan for your next few projects. Among those items are the solid color fabrics from Free Spirit. Have you seen them? The colors are so clear and sharp. Several of the associates at H&C have already made projects or started projects with these fabrics. Ask about them when you come in. We think you will be excited by this array of color too.

We've Done It Again

The staff of Heirlooms & Comforts has done it again! They have successfully kept the refreshments fresh and drawn for in-shop prizes and made a beautiful setting for the Fall'n Stars quilt and cut yards and yards of fabrics you wanted and located book titles you were searching for and given out directions to the next shop in the "hop", etc. Thank you ladies for arranging a beautiful shop interior and to Bobby for cleaning windows and painting trim to make the shop look clean and happy. And if you hadn't been by since last fall when the Town of Central and the SC Highway Dept. re-scaped the front where the street and the sidewalk were crumbling, don't you love the sidewalk improvements and the parking improvements along with the added safety of the stop sign? Thanks to all our old friends and new customers who participated in another successful Carolina Shop Hop!! You make this an unforgettable time in the lives of those who serve you at Heirlooms & Comforts.

H&C Feature of the Week: Christmas Motif Fabrics
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week we will feature Christmas motif fabrics which are being shipped now for planning holiday sewing. Be among those who get first choice on yardage as it comes in. Among the groups that have arrived already are Sentiments from Moda and Christmas Spirit from Moda. When you purchase holiday motif fabrics this week get DOUBLE PUNCHES on your fabric card. You don't have a Fabric Card from Heirlooms & Comforts??? Ask for one on your next visit - they are a free perk from us to you.

Prizes from Shop Hop
Carolina Shop Hop shopkeepers will meet next week to sort through all the passports that were turned in at various shops as you completed your tour of the shops. The passports will be separated into those with 14 stamps, those with 13 stamps, those with whatever #of stamps are on them and then the drawings will begin. The Grand Prizes will come from those with the most stamps and the $value baskets will be drawn. The winners will be notified and the winners' names will be listed on the Carolina Shop Hop web site. Winners will go to the shop where the baskets are on display to pick up their prizes. Good luck to all of you who turned in passports. If you have further questions about the prizes, look at the Rules posted on the Carolina Shop Hop web site.

John with Eleanor-first time he held her
The past two weeks have proven that one should never give up a dream. FINALLY! A Granddaughter. Eleanor Jane Ballentine was born on July 8, a healthy 8 lbs. 14 oz. and 22 inches long - the first granddaughter for Bobby and me and for her maternal grandparents, Coach and Peggy Huckeba in Arkansas. Eleanor came to a world of 6 Ballentine boys and 3 Huckeba boys. Now the challenge is to see if she plays ball or plays with dolls surrounded by three football coaches in her uncles and grandfather.
Eleanor on her quilt from "Anna Banana"

Grandma Ballentine is going to start sewing with batiste and laces!! I'm hoping that my theory of how a child behaves is somewhat affected by the style of clothing she is dressed in - dressing prissy helps one to feel prissy. Do you think she could be influenced by those boys to wrestle and tackle when she is wearing frills? We'll see, because Grandma and Mamma Peg are planning on pink and pretty for this little lady.

Eleanor screaming because Grandma has to go back to SC

Grandma is so grateful to the ladies of Heirlooms & Comforts for picking up the "slack" at the shop while I stayed in Arkansas to help get Eleanor and her mom and dad through the first week of her life! We had some really great times together. Her room is all set and decorated beautifully. Mom picked out the fabrics and Grandma made the curtains and crib set. Eleanor's dad saw that there was fabric left from the decorating and requested YET ANOTHER quilt - imagine that from the man who never had enough quilts. When I announced to Eleanor that it was time for Grandma to come home on Saturday her reaction was to scream and cry. Don't you love it when they cry for you? I've included some photos from the week for you to see this beautiful girl. Excuse my bragging, but I agree with Grandpa and her dad that Eleanor is beautiful.

H&C Feature of the Week: Clover Silk Pins
At Heirlooms & Comforts this week our feature is "Fall 'n Stars" Carolina Shop Hop 2012 with a 25% discount on Clover Silk Pins. These are such skinny pins that they do not skew your fabrics when you pin seams together for sewing. They are long enough to hold the surrounding fabrics securely for the sewing process. These pins have a glass head so that you can press over them and not worry about melting the plastic heads. We find that these are our favorite pins and you can't have too many of these staple items!

Carolina Shop Hop
Carolina Shop Hop with 14 great Carolina shops included in the hop around northwest South Carolina and western North Carolina continues through Saturday, July 21. Store hours are different this week and you can register for door prizes and grand prizes. Go the to find all the rules of participation and to print out a Passport to get stamped for qualification to win those prizes including a Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 875Q. Hop on in for great fun!

Happy 4th of July

We probably have as many different ways of celebrating Independence Day as there are families in our great country. We have known many changes in our observance over the years. Now in 2012 our immediate family is in several different locales and Bobby and I have landed in Arkansas to spend the holiday with our oldest child and his wife and family. How nice this is to see yet another family similar to ours in fellowship. Different, yet not so different. We are, really, waiting for grandchild number 7 to come into the world. Number 7 was expected last Wednesday, but has decided to make us wait a while longer. All is ready; we just need this baby to cuddle with and coo to. Number 7 will come into a great situation - four grandparents who are already crazy over the first grandchildren, two loving parents, four uncles, five aunts, and NINE boy cousins. Whoa! Lots to learn and adjust to, Number 7. But come on; the nursery is ready (Grandma got done ahead of time) and the quilts are ready - thanks "Anna Banana".

I am a happy Grandma! I can be patient when things are in good order.

H&C Feature of the Week: Clean Off the Bolt
At Heirlooms and Comforts this week we will feature Clean Off the Bolt Week (two days). That means that you can get 25% off any fabric when you buy all of the yardage left on the board of regular priced fabric. If you choose a sale priced fabric you can get another 10% off when you buy all that is remaining. Come in on Monday and Tuesday to get your choices before the Carolina Shop Hop begins the next weekend.

Happy 4th of July
At Heirlooms & Comforts we will be CLOSED July 4-7 to celebrate our nation's independence. Find a celebration or create one of your own, but remember and rejoice over our Freedom and our freedoms provided by our nation's Constitution. Pursue that life of liberty and happiness.

Carolina Shop Hop begins on July 13 and lasts until the next weekend, ending on July 21. Go to to see details of how the shop hop works and participate to qualify for part of the $20,000.00 worth of prizes being given away by the 14 shops in North and South Carolina. Print your passport, gather three friends and do the road trip. We are looking for you.
